We believe so many women have been practicing not eating for years (maybe decades!) that we don't need anymore help about how NOT to eat. Same goes for men who have tried this and that and still struggle to manage their health and weight.
Many of us are (sadly) professionals at not eating already.
And while these more extreme strategies can work better for men due to their physiology to handle more stress without sacrificing as much muscle loss, the impact on women can be catastrophic in the way that they down-regulate our metabolism and possibly trigger disordered eating habits.
We think this post resonated because not everyone was taught how to eat well growing up. And when you don't know what the heck to eat, it's easy to fall for anything you see online, especially those with big claims around quick weight loss or longevity.
Just like sleeping, moving your body, oral hygiene and other self-care habits, eating is a SKILL that children develop by watching their parents and others around them. And whether we learn to well or not is often determined by our environment and upbringing.
What do we mean by eating well?
Eating in a way that:
👉supports balanced blood sugar
👉meets micronutrient, macronutrient, and energy needs
👉allows one to understand true fullness (satiation) without being in a food coma or over-eating to the point of pain or discomfort
Unfortunately, with the onslaught of highly palatable processed foods + sedentary lifestyles, living in balance for most adults in modern times is challenging, let alone how our children are impacted by these drastic changes.
So, what can you do about it?
