If you've been following us long enough, you know that every decade after age 30, we lose 3-5% of our muscle mass if we're not consuming sufficient protein + actively developing and maintaining our skeletal muscle mass (i.e. the trainable muscle on our body, like quads, glutes, hamstrings, back, etc.).
Not only will muscle mass protect you into older age (falls are the leading cause of injury-related death among adults age 65 and older), it also:
- helps regulate your blood sugar: the more muscle you have, the more carbs you can eat, the more the carbs store in your muscle cells as glycogen instead of converting to fat
- supports your immune system: illness and disease love a toxic body; they thrive in bodies that have more triglycerides (i.e. fat cells) because almost all toxins are fat soluble, which requires fat tissue to survive.
- builds bone density: with the right training stimulus, your body builds not just muscle mass but also strengthens bone density which will protect you into older age
- helps burns body fat: the more skeletal muscle mass you have, the more calories you burn at rest, the lower your body fat (as long as you're not over-eating)
- improves posture and emotional state: yep, when you strength train properly and improve your body's natural state of alignment, your posture improves which directly enhances your emotional state; on the other hand, if you're sitting at a desk all day and not training, you're more likely to walk around hunched over 24/7, often leading to a poor emotional state as a result
Considering that modern society is conducive to being sedentary for most of the day as we have outsourced a majority of our movement, one must intentionally incorporate exercises that challenge the muscles in order to keep our bodies in tip top shape for a lifetime.
True beginners can absolutely develop muscle through bodyweight exercises alone or some through certain modalities like Yoga, Pilates, and even Peloton rides.
But at some point, most people will plateau and/or get injured.
