How bad I felt that Sunday was likely the best I would have felt just 5 years ago.
In other words, waking up feeling crappy was the norm for me before learning about nutrition science and the impact of food, alcohol, etc. on the body. I had no idea how AMAZING my body was capable of feeling day after day!
I used to eat what I thought was healthy after skipping several meals each day, drink copious amounts of wine because "antioxidants", wake up with a massive headache and basically hungover all the time, and then push my body to exercise hard the next morning with no proper fuel beforehand. I was often cranky, frustrated, snappy, triggered 24/7. My sleep was garbage. My body was inflamed. I had indigestion, fatigue, etc. I was sick often. I was stressed to the absolute max. My period was so bad and heavy, the Dr's wanted to perform a hysterectomy on me at just 35 years old!
I accepted "advice" from older friends and family warning me that feeling tired, lethargic, moody, having injuries, indigestion, ailments, conditions and diseases etc. is just part of getting older.
I know this now to be COMPLETELY not true.
Here's what I know is true:
We don't start feeling bad as we age because of getting older.
We start feeling bad as we age because poor lifestyle habits eventually catch up and the body can't handle it any more.
Instead of accepting these conditions as part of getting older, I kept searching and searching for a solution. Once I discovered and implemented the basics of nutrition science, every single negative ailment I experienced was gone from my life. Everything that was making me feel so bad was completely related to the food and beverages that I was putting into my body.
Your body deserves way more credit. It is meant to be functioning well into our older years. But if we continue to abuse it over and over, we can't expect it to operate like this well-oiled machine.
If you've been drinking even lightly or moderately for years, your liver is not in ideal condition. And when your liver is taxed, it can't process other toxins in the body + can't metabolize body fat as well.
In retrospect, I wish I had gone out to dinner instead. And then maybe had one drink and danced the rest of the night.
Hindsight is always 20/20! But nowadays I welcome this kind of contrast when I make decisions that end up not being worth it... because I then make better decisions next time.
In the following days, I did nothing extreme. And this is the part I shared with our community and clients: when you have a big weekend or a big meal or had a binge eating session, the best thing to do is get right back to eating balanced, in moderation. Starving yourself, saying F it and giving up, over exercising, etc. will just dig a deeper hole.
Because what we teach is not a diet but knowledge, skills and tools to use for a lifetime, there is no stopping. There is no on and off the wagon. You just make decisions which have certain outcomes and micro-adjust at every chance you get to make better decisions next time that are more in alignment with your most important goals.
I've already visualized how I want to spend my birthday next year: I want to be on a boat, outside in the sun, listening to awesome music, dancing into the night, alcohol-free, and in bed by 10pm, because that sounds way better to me than posting up at a bar and drinking too much because people are giving me way too many free shots 😂
