Body Fat is Not Your Enemy, It’s Your Survival Tool
Body fat has been essential to human survival for millennia.
It's not just a burden we carry—it’s an energy reservoir that has helped our ancestors survive times of food scarcity and extreme conditions.
Fat insulates our bodies, protecting vital organs, regulating temperature, and providing the energy we need to thrive.
Without it, our bodies wouldn’t have the fuel to perform even basic functions like walking, thinking, or even breathing.
Subcutaneous fat (the fat under your skin) helps cushion the body and protect it from injury.
Even visceral fat, when in healthy amounts, plays a role in protecting your organs.
It’s not about eradicating fat entirely; it’s about understanding how much we need for optimal function and well-being.
For women, body fat is even more important.
We are meant to have a certain level of body fat during reproductive years and will always have a higher essential body fat level than men.
The more we can embrace this difference, the less we fight our physiology.
Shifting the Perspective
When you recognize body fat as a necessary component of life, it helps to shift your mindset from getting rid of fat to optimizing my health.
This shift creates space for balance and appreciation, allowing you to make lifestyle changes from a place of care rather than punishment.
Fat itself is not the issue; it’s the lack of muscle mass AND the imbalance or accumulation of excess visceral fat in particular that can become harmful.
By adopting healthier habits, such as balanced nutrition, regular movement, and stress management, you can manage this balance.
But it begins with respecting the role fat plays in your body’s resilience and survival.
Nourishing Healthy Habits, Not Restriction
The most sustainable path to a healthier body composition is not one of restriction and punishment but one of nourishment and care.
Start by fueling your body with nutrient-rich foods that support your metabolism, gut health, and overall energy levels, including plenty of protein + produce.
Your fat stores can then regulate themselves through consistent, healthy habits.
Exercise is another powerful tool, not to simply burn fat but to strengthen muscles and improve your cardiovascular health.
When we focus on improving habits rather than “hating fat,” we reduce the emotional strain of body image and instead embrace our natural physiology.
You are not at war with your body—your body is working for you every day.
If you give it what it needs to thrive, it will support you in return.
Embrace the Journey
Body fat doesn’t have to be a source of shame. It’s time to appreciate it for what it is: a mechanism that has kept humanity alive through the ages.
As you adopt healthier habits, remember that the goal isn’t to punish yourself or conform to societal pressures. It’s to create a sustainable, loving relationship with your body and honor the role fat plays in that process.
We invite you today and every day to celebrate how hard your body shows up for you!
Try choosing a slightly better-feeling thought about yourself and notice the ripple effect that it has throughout the rest of your day.
